Our Proud History

Malcolm & Parsons Insurance Agency, Inc. trace our roots to the spring of 1825 when Elijah Atherton started offering insurance to individuals and businesses in South Eastern Massachusetts. Elijah was a student of Benjamin Franklin. Emulating

Mr. Franklin, an incorporator of the first mutual
insurance company in America in 1752, Elijah was one of five original Agents appointed by Norfolk Mutual Insurance company, later the Norfolk & Dedham Insurance Group (one of many companies we still do business with today).

Ownership passed to Jabez Talbot and from him to E. Perry Curtis. Mr.
Curtis carried on the Agency until his death, at which time his spouse,
Genie Curtis, took over and continued the business. Mrs. Curtis continued
to operate and manage the Agency as long as she lived.

In 1939, Edgar S. Malcolm, formerly with the Norfolk Trust Company (now Bank of America), purchased the insurance business from the estate of the late Mrs. Genie Curtis. Mr. Malcolm was the son of George Malcolm, a Stoughton Selectman and State Legislator. 1939 to 1966 saw Mr. Malcolm manage and expand the Agency by purchasing the Freeman Insurance Agency, also, the insurance agencies of Joseph Nally and Roy Fobes. Additionally, Edgar Malcolm bought the Burns Agency, at 4 Freeman Street in late 1949, and consolidated operations into the Freeman Street offices in 1950.

Mr. Malcolm passed ownership control to Irving R. Parsons July 1st, 1966, and worked at the Agency until close to the time of his death in 1984. In 1971, Mr. Parsons incorporated the Agency and changed the name to Malcolm & Parsons Insurance Agency, Inc. Mr. Parsons’ prior position as Vice President at Kemper Insurance Company, Boston Office, had well prepared him to manage the sizable, and still growing agency. Irving, at the time a Norwood resident, has at different times been President of The Neponset Valley Chamber of Commerce, Officer/Board Member of The Professional Insurance Agents of Massachusetts, and Past Master of Norwood's Masonic Temple.

The Agency's offices were expanded in 1986, still on Freeman Street, to make room for additional personnel, including Irv Parsons' son, David. David Parsons graduated from Business School in 1980, gaining experience working for various financial firms on Wall Street for over five years. Finding his temperament more suited to insurance than Wall Street, he joined the Agency in sales, attended extensive insurance schooling, quickly passing all licensing tests (including the State’s highest exam) to become a fully licensed Insurance Advisor, Broker, and Agent. David has been an Advisory Board member for the Professional Insurance Agents of New England, President of Metro-South Independent Insurance Agents, Past Board member of the Stoughton Chamber of Commerce, and Board Member and Finance Chairman for Kids Voting Stoughton.

In January 1991 Malcolm & Parsons purchased the George Johnston Insurance Agency of Norwood. The Norwood office offered a second location to serve the increasing numbers of Businesses and Families the Agency count as Clients. In July 1997 the Freeman Street offices expanded, yet again, all the way to Washington Street in Stoughton center (number 770), to meet the demands of a growing staff and provide Client conference space when the Norwood office was sold. After 15 years experience, David Parsons became owner of Malcolm & Parsons in July, 2000.

As Stoughton's largest and oldest agency (oldest company, period), Malcolm & Parsons looks to the future -- with an eye on the past. As we know Ben Franklin would do, the Agency continually invests in the best employees and technologies available. All Employees attend, at a MINIMUM, one insurance class every 4 months. Many of our people ran or owned their own agencies prior to joining Malcolm & Parsons, bringing the wealth of their experience to our Client’s advantage.
