2. Get 4 Snow Tires. No other single thing will give you more safety and confidence in the snow. Every driver and car’s safety is ultimately limited by the amount of traction available, and snow tires can double and triple available traction and therefore safety. Snow tires are much more important and valuable than 4x4 & AWD, and only make cars with AWD even better for inclement conditions. 3. Be careful in S.U.V’s. The same safety disadvantages apply to SUV’s no matter the weather. They cannot turn, slow down, or stop as well as cars, even in the snow. Bad weather can even create a worse situation of a false sense of security because you can accelerate well, but don’t realize that you cannot stop or turn well. 4. Slow down. In snowy conditions slow down. More snow = slow down more. In icy conditions stay home. 5. Rain-X. Seeing is critical and Rain-X works. A simple wipe of your windshield stops snow and ice from sticking to it so you can see. Needs to be reapplied every 2-3 weeks in winter or can be added to your washer fluid. 6. Fog lights. Again seeing is critical. Fog lights aid vision tremendously when there is fog or snow in the air. If you live in an area with lots of snow, or travel frequently request fog lights on your new car, or have them retrofitted to your existing car. 7. Leave extra following distance: The reactions and movements of other cars are far less predictable in the snow. Leave extra space so you don’t become part or their problem. 8. Stay rested. Snow driving, especially at night can use up to 4X as much energy to focus as typical driving. Stay rested so you are up to the task. 9. Carry a cell phone and your motor club card. If you have a problem it will get solved quickly and safely, don’t get stuck. 10. Get as much training as possible.
